What makes the projects by the Silesian studio Latre Design stand out? First and foremost, respect for the character, history and unique details found in a given place. The studio was established in 2018 by an architect Ewelina Latra-Kalinowska, Msc – a graduate from the Silesian University of Technology, who now puts her knowledge of cubature architecture to good use, guiding clients through challenging interior makeovers in old buildings.

The twists and turns of the road to finding one’s own passion

Opening her own interior design studio was not the biggest dream of Latre Design’s founder. For a long time, Ewelina Latra-Kalinowska saw her future in a broad sense of cubature architecture. She wanted to work on projects involving detached houses, apartments, office buildings and hotels. To achieve these goals, she first focused on her education – a two-stage degree at the Silesian University of Technology – and then took her first professional steps.

The shift towards interior design came quite unexpectedly. It all started with her brother, who asked the architect to help him furnish his new flat. The new challenge proved fascinating, and the greater independence and scope for creativity compared to cubature architecture brought a lot of satisfaction. Over time, Ewelina Latra-Kalinowska began to explore the ins and outs of design, follow industry trends… and finally she decided to take a break from her job as a ‘sketcher’ and start a new chapter in her professional life.

Today, she operates under her own brand, realising interior design projects throughout Silesia. In her work, she focuses on respect for the existing architectural fabric, drawing colours and patterns from her many travels, which are one of her greatest sources of inspiration. She shares details of her approach to design work in response to a few questions we asked her.

What values and outlook guide your design work? What are your priorities in creating interior designs?

The most important thing for me is respect for old architecture and details and, of course, listening to the client’s needs, because ultimately it is them who will be using the space I design and they should feel comfortable in it.

Do you have a favourite interior design style? If so, what kind?

I tend to focus on combining styles and fresh, bold and unusual design in my projects. I like trends such as modern classic or eclecticism, where old meets new. I’m a big fan of good old vintage.

What materials and technologies do you most like to use in your projects?

I like to choose natural materials – wood (including that which can be renovated), stone, linen, cotton and leather. I like to use small ceramic tiles, often in patterns. I also sometimes opt for wallpaper and photo wallpaper.

What are your experiences of working with clients? What do you think is the key to a successful collaboration?

For me, the primary focus is on listening to the client’s expectations and aspirations, because it is their home where they should feel comfortable. At the same time, I try to suggest interesting solutions that investors may not have known about. In all conversations, I put honesty first and foremost.

Can you describe the most interesting project you have worked on?

I think it was a flat in a tenement in the Old Ochota district of Warsaw. It was a total wreck – we had to knock down many walls and completely change the layout. On a technical and construction level, the project was extremely challenging, but the result was well worth the effort. A beautiful, multi-coloured vintage-style arrangement with art in the background has been created. We found loads of walls with nicely laid bricks, and we ran the cables outside, which gave it a bit of a loft vibe. We also used green tiles from the 1960s found under the rubble. I can safely say that the interior is insane.

Do you offer a consultation service?

Yes, of course.
